Mode of Action:

Vitamin C is essential for collagen formation and tissue repair. It participates in oxidation/reduction reactions and plays a role in metabolic pathways like the synthesis of catecholamines, carnitine, and steroids. It also aids in converting folic acid to folinic acid.

Dosage & Administration:

Prevention of scurvy: 1 tablet daily
Treatment of scurvy: 1-2 tablets daily; dose may increase based on severity
Reduction of stroke risk in the elderly: 1-2 tablets daily
Other cases: 1 tablet daily or as directed
Max safe dose: 2000 mg/day in divided doses
Sachet: 1 sachet daily (max 2000 mg/day)
Parenteral administration: For those unable to take oral doses, IM is preferred.

Interactions:

Ascorbic Acid interacts with various drugs, such as aminophylline, erythromycin, and sodium bicarbonate. It enhances paracetamol's half-life and increases iron absorption.

Side Effects:

High doses may cause diarrhea, abdominal bloating, iron over-absorption, hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, and hemolysis in certain conditions.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

Safe in normal doses, but high doses (5 gm/day or more) may cause abortion. Safe during lactation.

Precautions:

Avoid megadoses (over 1000 mg/day) during pregnancy due to the risk of neonatal scurvy. It can cause false positives in certain lab tests.

Storage:

Store in a dry place below 30˚C.
